Church Sign Audit: 25 Things to Check Before Your Next Big Sunday
Share
You do not need a complete signage redesign to make a church campus easier to navigate. Often, the fastest improvement comes from finding the obvious problems and fixing them one by one.
Use this 25-point sign audit before Easter, Christmas, a fall event, a conference, or any weekend when you expect extra guests.
Road and entrance
- Can a first-time driver identify the church from the road?
- Is the correct driveway obvious?
- Are signs visible before the turn?
- Are trees, flags, or parked cars blocking the view?
- Can signs still be read after dark?
Parking
- Is guest parking clearly marked?
- Is overflow parking identified?
- Are arrows visible before parking-lot decision points?
- Are temporary event routes accurate?
- Are old event signs still sitting outside?
Entrances
- Is the main entrance obvious from the lot?
- Is the kids entrance clearly identified?
- Are weekday/event entrances different from Sunday entrances?
- Does the entrance signage use plain language?
Indoor wayfinding
- Can guests find the worship center?
- Can parents find kids check-in?
- Can people find restrooms without asking?
- Is guest services visible?
- Are hallway arrows placed before the turn?
- Are ministry names understandable to outsiders?
Design and condition
- Is the text large enough?
- Is contrast strong enough?
- Do signs use consistent terminology?
- Are any signs faded, bent, torn, or outdated?
- Are temporary signs stored and labeled for reuse?
How to run the audit
Have someone unfamiliar with the campus walk or drive the route. Do not coach them. Watch where they slow down, turn the wrong way, or ask a question.
Fix confusion in priority order
Start with the biggest visitor decisions:
- Find the property
- Park
- Find the entrance
- Find kids
- Find worship
- Find restrooms and guest services
Decorative signs come after functional clarity.
Build a replacement list
Divide needs into:
- Permanent signs
- Reusable portable signs
- Seasonal/event signs
This keeps you from buying everything at once and helps prioritize the pieces that solve the most confusion.
