10 Church Banner Design Mistakes That Make Signs Hard to Read
Share
Most church banner problems are not printing problems. They are design problems that become obvious only after the banner is installed.
Here are ten common mistakes that make church banners harder to read—and what to do instead.
1. Too much text
A banner is not a bulletin. If the copy needs several sentences, move those details to a webpage or QR code.
2. Text that is too small
Design software makes small type look comfortable because the artwork fills the screen. Always judge text size based on the real viewing distance.
3. Weak contrast
Light gray on white or dark blue on black may look stylish up close but disappear outdoors. Use strong contrast for the main message.
4. Busy photography behind text
Photos create varying light and dark areas. Add a solid panel, overlay, or gradient behind text so readability stays consistent.
5. No visual hierarchy
If the church name, event title, date, time, and website are all the same size, the reader does not know where to start.
6. Oversized logos
Your logo matters, but it should not overpower the actual message. For event banners, the event title usually deserves the strongest position.
7. Too many fonts
Two fonts are usually enough. Use one strong display face and one supporting typeface. Avoid mixing multiple decorative scripts and novelty fonts.
8. Information too close to the edge
Keep important text and logos away from hems, grommets, trims, and mounting hardware. Build a comfortable safe zone.
9. Designing without considering placement
A dark banner may disappear against a dark brick wall. A green banner can blend into landscaping. Design with the actual environment in mind.
10. Trying to serve multiple audiences at once
A sign aimed at passing drivers should not also try to explain registration details to someone standing three feet away. Use separate signs for separate jobs.
A better banner formula
For most event banners:
- Large event name
- Date/time
- One short supporting line
- Church name or logo
Test before printing
Reduce the design on screen until it is small, or place it into a photo of the intended location. If the headline disappears, fix it before printing.
